My experience of our staff development

I joined the Yorkshire Building Society in 2004 as Treasury Systems Manager. Right from the start it was clear that my manager was keen to develop me further. Whenever we felt there was a training need, arrangements were made to ensure that I received the necessary training.

As I developed in my role, I was drawn to project management. I discussed this with my manager and she pointed me in the direction of the programme office. Yet even before I had the chance to take up project management training, an opportunity came up for me to move into the project management team.

As soon as I joined the team, I was discussing the different project management methodologies and courses they had attended. I then decided what path would fit me best and within 5 months of starting I’d received external training to achieve project management qualifications. I was really pleased when I received my results, especially because my achievement was recognised with an announcement at the team meeting with a champagne and strawberry celebration – and an extra bottle for me to take home!

The development I’ve been through here has helped build my confidence and confirmed I had made the right career and employer choice – especially not knowing how many opportunities my new role will bring in the future.
